Avoidance threshold to oil water soluble fraction by a juvenile marine teleost fish ArchiMer
Claireaux, Guy; Queau, Pierre; Marras, Stefano; Le Floch, Stephane; Farrell, Anthony P.; Nicolas-kopec, Annabelle; Lemaire, Philippe; Domenici, Paolo.
When oil spills occur, behavior is the first line of defense for a fish to avoid being contaminated. Here, we determined the avoidance threshold of the European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) to the water-soluble fraction (WSF) of oil using a dual flow choice box. Our experiment revealed that a plume of 20%-diluted WSF (total PAH concentration: 8.54 μg L-1) triggered a significant avoidance response that was detected within 7.5 minutes of introducing WSF-contaminated water in the experimental set-up. However, the ecological relevance of seabass capacity to detect and avoid WSF remains to be established. In the short term, such response is indeed liable to reduce sea bass contact time with oil-contaminated water and thus preserve their functional integrity....

Behaviour and orcadian rhythm of the fish bathygobius soporator Valenciennes (Gobiidae) under the influence of environmental salinity and temperature Zoologia
Fanta,Edith.
The behavioural patterns and their cireadian rhythms may be adaptive to the peculiar environmental conditions of subtropical brackish waters where Ba-thygobius soporator Valenciennes, 1837 live. Adult fish were caught at the southern Brazilian coast from mangrove rivers and rocky shores in a bay, where temperature and water salinity vary during the day and through the year. Observation on the behaviour of the animals was undertaken in salinity 8.5ppt, 17.0ppt, 25.5ppt and 34.0ppt, each one in temperatures of 18ºC and 28ºC. Temperature and salinity affect the frequency and intensity of some of the behavioural events, more than its pattern or rhythm. Swimming is rare, decreasing along the day and with temperature increase, being even lower at low salinity;...

Bioaccumulation of trace elements in pelagic fish from the Western Indian Ocean ArchiMer
Kojadinovic, Jessica; Potier, Michel; Le Corre, Matthieu; Cosson, Richard P.; Bustamante, Paco.
Trace elements were analyzed in fish of commercial interest to determine their importance in marine systems of the Western Indian Ocean and their bioaccumulation patterns. The results are equivalent or lower than levels reported in ichthyofauna worldwide. Certain values of muscular Cd, Hg, Pb and Zn were, however, above thresholds for human consumption. Levels varied among tissues, species and fish length, but were seldom influenced by the nutritional condition of the fish, its gender and its reproductive status. Correlations between hepatic Hg and Se levels in Swordfish (r(2) = 0.747) and Yellowfin Tunas (r(2) = 0.226), and among metallothionein linking metals imply the existence of detoxification processes in these species. Level differences between fish...

Biochemical biomarkers of exposure to deltamethrin in freshwater fish, Ancistrus multispinis BABT
Assis,Helena Cristina da Silva de; Nicareta,Lilian; Salvo,Ligia Maria; Klemz,Claudio; Truppel,Jessé Henrique; Calegari,Rossana.
This study aimed to determine the effect of sublethal doses of deltamethrin, using biochemical biomarkers as activities of cholinesterase (ChE), ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD) and the Na+K+- ATPase and levels of total cytochrome P450 (CYP450). Fishes received sublethal doses of deltamethrin and were sacrificed after 96 h of exposure. Samples of gills, heart, brain, liver and muscle were collected for enzymatic analyses. Deltamethrin inhibited the activity of the gills and heart Na+ K+-ATPase, induced the liver total CYP450, as well as the liver EROD activity. The activity of the ChE was not inhibited by deltamethrin. Deltamethrin altered the hepatic metabolism and the normal ionic flux in Ancistrus multispinis.

Biofilm formation by Vibrio parahaemolyticus on different surfaces and its resistance to sodium hypochlorite Ciência Rural
Rosa,Janaina Viana da; Conceição,Natália Volpato da; Conceição,Rita de Cássia dos Santos da; Timm,Cláudio Dias.
ABSTRACT: Vibrio parahaemolyticus is an important pathogen for both fish industry and consumers. It forms biofilm which makes it difficult to eliminate this microorganism using sanitizers. This study aimed to assess biofilm formation on different surfaces and effect of biofilm on resistance to sanitizers. Eight isolates of biofilm-forming V. parahaemolyticus were tested for the ability to form biofilms on a number of surfaces including high density polyethylene, stainless steel, glass, exoskeleton of Farfantepenaeus paulensis (Pink Shrimp), and operculum of Micropogonias furnieri (Whitemouth Croaker). Efficiency of sanitizer sodium hypochlorite against the bacteria was evaluated in the biofilms formed on the surface of the materials used; out the eight...

Biogeography and comparative cytogenetics between two populations of Hoplias malabaricus (Bloch, 1794) (Ostariophysi: Erythrinidae) from coastal basins in the State of Bahia, Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Jacobina,Uedson Pereira; Affonso,Paulo Roberto Antunes de Mello; Carneiro,Paulo Luiz Souza; Dergam,Jorge Abdala.
The species Hoplias malabaricus is a predator fish found in nearly all cis-Andean basins. From a cytogenetic point of view, this species comprises, at least, seven differentiated karyomorphs. Several localities have been formerly analyzed in Brazil, however, some regions, such as Bahia State, remain underrepresented. Recently, the Brazilian Environment Ministry classified both Itapicuru and Contas river basins (entirely located within Bahia territory) as priority conservation areas, whose biodiversity status lacks enough information. Therefore, the goal of the present work was to characterize, cytogenetically, populations of H. malabaricus from both basins, by using conventional staining, Ag-NOR and C-banding techniques. All specimens presented a diploid...

Biorheological properties of intertidal organic fluff on mud flats and its modification of gill ventilation in buried sole Solea solea ArchiMer
Jenkinson, Ian; Claireaux, Guy; Gentien, Patrick.
Intertidal mudflats are important nursery grounds for juveniles of many fish species. However, they are being used increasingly to farm bivalve molluscs, which produce large amounts of organic "fluff", overlying the mud. Fish such as sole, Solea solea, hide in this fluff from potential predators, but the energy consumed by respiring the fluff may be high due to its biorheological properties. We developed an ichthyoviscometer. It incorporates a freshly killed fish as a viscometer, and we developed it to measure the rheological properties of fluids and suspensions, including fluff, at scales encompassing those in gill ventilation. We have shown that the rheological behaviour of fluff is close to that of a gel with a yield stress strongly dependent on...

Blood chemistry profile of Surubim hybrid fish (Pseudoplatystoma reticulatum X P. corruscans) raised in different stocking densities Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Labarrère,Carla Rosa; Faria,Paulo Mário Carvalho de; Teixeira,Edgar de Alencar; Melo,Marília Martins.
Massive production, such as fish growing in water recirculation system, imposes challenges to animals capable of altering their homeostatic balance, and is able to affect their physiological performance. Therefore, the levels of ions and serum enzymes can be used as indicators of fish health. This study aimed to analyze the blood biochemistry profile of hybrid surubim (P. reticulatum X P. corruscans) submitted to different stocking densities in water recirculation system, in two distinct stages of production, from 150 to 400 g (first trial), and 400 to 1000 g (second trial). In the first trial, the five stocking rates were: 27.5, 47.5, 67.5, 87.5 and 107.5 fish/m³ of water. To obtain these densities, it was used 11, 19, 27, 35 and 43 fish per tank,...
